Finally Botero
The Botero exhibition had been on-going at the Singapore Art Musuem for some months now and I finally caught it on the weekend before it ended. It has been some months since I paid a visit to the museum and I was quite glad to see a really healthy turnout when I was there. Maybe many other people knew that it was the last day of the Botero exhibition too! :c)
My thoughts on Botero? Frankly, I did not enjoy it as much as Russel Wong's photography exhibition that was going on at the musuem too. Somehow, the people he portrayed in his paintings did not struck me as individuals. Mostly, the paintings felt like the same people in each painting except for different settings and costumes. Although, it was really refreshing to see the human form portrayed with all its imperfections. Of course there were a few that I really liked, "Dancers (2002)", "Adam and Eve (1989)" and my personal favourite of the exhibition, "The Bathroom (1989)". These were the few paintings that compelled me to stop, look, ponder and smile. I felt "The Bathroom (1989)" clearly epitomises that idea of human imperfection. In the bathroom, we are all faced with our own bodily imperfections. Wishing for smaller tummies, longer legs, bigger breasts, smaller butts etc etc, and the list continues. In this painting, I wondered what thoughts were running through the subject's head as she went about her daily bathroom rituals. Her bodily imperfections, her tasks for the day? The domestic setting brought to mind, my own daily bathroom rituals and lent to the painting a sense of humanity.
I enjoyed the Russel Wong photography exhibition better as I felt he had managed to capture the essence of his subjects. In each photo, the viewer could distinctly feel the mood of the subject. I felt as if I was looking at someone's private photo album of spontaneous photographs instead of a photographer's portfolio. Although his photographs featured well known personalities, he managed to convey a feeling of earthy-ness to his subjects and allowed us a glimpse of different facets of these personalities. My favourite? Hmm, I could not pick any but I would really loved to be photographed by Russel Wong because I wonder what type of a photograph I would be!!!!! :c)
