MayDay is back!!!

After a long wait, Mayday has finally released album number 7. Ashin is a magician with words and their lyrics once again move me to tears. As one friend commented after listening to this new album, "Listening to Mayday makes you want to make a better life for yourself.". Their lyrics never fail to make me reflect on the state of my life and be amazed that someone else out there feels the same as me and understands how I feel.

I have different favorites at different times, it really depends on the state of mind that I am in. But I always feel that Mayday has a song for every occasion. I wish I could write music like Ashin, truthful and yet inspiring.

My current favorite is this one from an album long ago.

It brought inspiration and comfort to me recently when I was in Ireland on a certain project. It was an in way sad and depressing project to be on. Sometimes, in life, I think we are bound by the circumstances we find ourselves in and we really do not know what we are chasing after. We find ourselves in situations we never thought we will be in but we somehow make the best of it.

YOU-Tube

Words cannot express how much I LOVE YouTube and those users who post the latest episodes of drama serials there!! Sometimes it takes forever for Taiwanese entertainment programs and drama serials to reach our shores but with YouTube, I can get a taste of the latest drama and entertainment programs. In fact if not for YouTube, I would never have ended up so crazy over the HanaKimi series and buying all those "by-products" of the drama like soundtrack, magazines, posters etc of the drama. The drama was shown at 7pm on local television, a time I am never home yet and the DVDs costs a bomb, worse, I realise that they had censored some parts of the drama on local television due to gay theme, so I am happy that YouTube is around!

Anyway, I am signing off this entry and off to YouTube again to watch the latest entertainment news on SHE which users have posted there!!

Hana Kimi autograph signing session

Apparently, I am still capable to doing crazy teenybopper stuff at my old age like attending autograph signings by celebrities. I am sure it is already well known that I am a big S.H.E. fan and how I missed their concert when they were performed here in January. Ella's new drama was also due to air on local television then and there was of course promotional activities for the drama, one of which was an autograph signing session. Anyone who has bought a copy of the drama serial soundtrack would simply need to bring along their CD sleeve to get their autograph. Since I have two copies of the soundtrack coz I bought a copy and my friend got a copy for Christmas also without knowing that I already had a copy, I decided I might as well get it signed.

Well, matters turned out to be alot more complicated as there was a super long queue by the time I arrived at the autograph signing venue. I suspect the massive turnout was mainly due to the presence of her gorgeous co-star, Wu Chun who acted as her love interest in the drama since 99% of the turnout were female. Er, so now I shall admit lah, I also think he is very good-looking and he is 50% of my reason for going for the autograph signing session. Ha ha.

The autograph session to end at 9.30pm and the organiser had already closed the queue by the time I wanted to join the queue as they expect that Ella and Wu Chun will not be able to sign finish everyone in time. Feeling rather sore about the whole thing, I attempted to call my friend in San Francisco to complain!! Why did I do that, you ask, well that is another story that will be told some other time. Anyway, I got the time difference all wrong and my friend ended up damn pissed off at me for waking her up in the middle of the night!! SOB! Cannot get autograph, somemore make my friend angry!!

Luckily, Ella and Wu Chun were very efficient and signed REALLY fast hence the organiser re-opened the queue. Of course I went to queue and not only did I managed to get my CD sleeve signed, I got to see Ella and Wu Chun up close and shake their hands. OK lah, quite cheapo but I was super happy after that. Ella is really pretty up close!! However I do not remember much about Mr Wu, except that he is quite fair and has a rather sharp chin. Hee hee. Maybe too excited about the whole thing so cannot remember much. BTW, my friend in SF called me back a few hours later and she was no longer pissed, although she could not get back to sleep after my phone call! Oops but whew! I thought she would have been mad for a long long time and I would have had to grovel my way back into her good books!

A day in the life of a part-time actor

A few years ago, I signed up with the local television station to be a part-time actor. The whole process has become a hazy memory and I seriously cannot remember how I got to know that they were looking for part-time actors! Anyway, they have never called me up and I thought that the audition video I had recorded at their request and my resume must have either landed in the nearest dustbin or is hidden away in some dusty corner.

To cut a long story short, they called me up last week for a role in an upcoming drama serial. It was a walk-on role of a customer who is the old friend of the restaurant owner. Since I have never tried acting on television, I decided to skip a day of work to get my 5 seconds on local television. Of course I applied for leave without telling the people at my office what exactly I was up to! Ha ha.

Anyway the day came and I made my way to the TV station, obtained my visitor pass at the gate and headed for wardrobe. After telling them what my role was, I was asked to change into a brighter colour top as the top I was wearing was too dull. After that, I was asked to go to make up. At make up, I felt as though I had stepped into a local variety show/drama as all the people hanging around were the local TV stars. It was kind of weird and I felt seriously out of place there as the people around me chatted with each other. It was not as if I could turn to the person next to me and start to make small talk!! And what will I say?? "Hi, so you are an actor?!" That will be so duh and it was not as if it was S.H.E. sitting next to me! Finally, someone came to my rescue and asked me what role I was suppose to play and which drama serial. He concluded that I did not need anymore make up and I gladly exited from the room to wait for the assistant producer to assign me to my vehicle.

I sat in the same van as the TV extras and it then it hit me that I have no idea where the van was heading. But I figured if anything, I will just hop into a cab and leave, it was not as if I was in this for the measly amount they were paying me! The hourly rate I charge clients in my day job is already more than 5 times what the local television station is paying me for a day's work! Location turned out to be a restaurant in Joo Chiat Road. There we waited for the crew to get the scene ready. As I sat there, I realised that this drama is a big production as sitting across from me, at the next table is one of local television's biggest star! (Hint: She had the opportunity to act with Jackie Chan in a Hollywood movie previously.) And several of local television's hottest young actors are also involved in this drama!! Abit strange to see these actors up close and I realised that I am really not excited about acting opposite these people, maybe because I do not watch much local television in the first place and the last local drama I have watched was years, yes, years ago! (I watch cable television channels lah.) Just to side track, I think "she who has acted before with Jackie Chan" looks really good in real life. She is 36 this year if I am not mistaken but looks like she is still in her 20s and her skin is fabulous! So fabulous that I was tempted to ask her what skin care products does she use and her daily skin regime!! Ha ha! I had to keep myself from staring at her face coz her complexion is darn good!!

Ok, now for my role. Basically, I had two scenes in the drama. In the first scene, I was to walk up to my old friend, (played by one of local television's male stars) and congratulate him on the opening of his new restaurant. In the second scene, he will sit me down at a table and introduce to me the specialities that his reataurant serves. I must say that it was very entertaining working with him. He was very nice throughout the two scenes although he is suppose to be a local TV star and have been for some years now. I NG-ed once each time for my two scenes but luckily I got them right at the second take for both scenes. However, I had to repeat my first scene several times because other people kept NG-ing!! There was not much acting skills involved in my scenes and I was one of the earliest to finish for the day. As I chatted with the extras, I was told that they were going to shoot till 9pm that night!!

My thoughts on my first television experience. I must say, I was right that I prefer television acting to stage work. Stage work is so much more exhasting as the actor has to play the same character over and over again but of course there is alot less waiting time involved. In television work, the actors spend most of their time sitting around waiting and waiting. Waiting for the set to be ready, waiting for the next scene etc and of course the script does not repeat like in stage work, where its repetitive hence memorising once is enough. Most of all, through this experience, I realise that I still enjoy acting and it was a really interesting experience so if the local television station comes calling again and my schedule permits, I will be acting again!

The DVD of their concert in Hong Kong!!! Ok, that does not really make up for attending the real thing but at least its some entertainment for me and it was really nice of her to get the present for me! Here's some photos of the present to share my joy!

Hana Kimi

Currently, I am reading a chinese adaptation from a japanese comic and came across quite an interesting passage. The comic has been adapted into a drama serial in Taiwan and I could not wait till the end of the serial to find out the ending so I bought the script adaptation to read.

越靠越近的两个人

我们的心越靠越近,
近到看不清是友情还是爱情,
深怕一不小心,
就会失去现在的美好感情。

The story is about a girl (Xi) who enters a boy school to be with a sports star(Quan) whom she admires. As Quan attends an all boys school, she has to cross-dress as a boy in order to be a student in the school. As luck would have it, she not only ends up in the same class as him but as his room mate! Lucky Gal! However, to Xi's dismay, Quan had already made up his mind to give up sports as he is unable to withstand the pressure of competitive sports. Slowly, with Xi's encouragement, Quan regains his confidence and begins to train once again for competitions.

Along the way, Quan finds out she is a girl but she does not know that he knows. Here is where things start to get interesting. These two people spend loads of time together and become really good friends and Quan feels compelled to protect Xi as she is a girl. Somewhere and somehow, the two of them fall in love but are unable to express their feelings for each other. So what are they to do?

How the story ends, I have no idea. The script adaptation does not say. Argh! Which means I have to continue to watch the drama to know the ending. Anyhow, this is quite an interesting drama and comes with loads of laughter. Of course it helps that my favourite Ella is the female lead and the actor who plays Quan is cute lah. Ha ha.

Starstruck

I just got back from MayDay's concert! Their concerts are always a blast to watch. Good music, good props and good rapport with the crowd. The sound quality of the concert venue really sucked though!! The background music was louder than the lead singer(??)'s voice!

The concert was four straight hours and my feet were seriously protesting by the end of the concert! With all the jumping and screaming I have done, I must have burnt quite a few calories tonight! I enjoyed the concert but I wish that they had performed more of their older hits. But I cannot really complain since they did sing my favourite song and it was a good performance overall. This is one band that needs no special effects to make their concerts special, because they make everything special simply by being who they are.

Because of their music, they make me believe.
Believe that dreaming is never wrong and dreams will one day come true.
Believe that we should always believe in ourselves and fight for the things we believe in.
Their music inspire me and their lyrics echo many of my thoughts.
Thank you, MayDay for being who you all are.

Watched a movie!

Ha, feel so pleased this weekend because I finally stepped into a movie theatre after a long long time and the movie was free! I caught the new Harry Potter movie on saturday. Most of the good tickets were sold out already but X's sister had free tickets and I was invited along! Yippee, yippee!

The movie was good but you have to be a Harry Potter fan to really enjoy it. The fourth book was long, so to turn it into a reasonable length movie, the producers had to leave out bits of the story. If you have not read the book, you would probably end up feeling quite lost. BTW, anyone has the fifth book and can lend me?

Overall, it was an enjoyable movie. I loved the part where they went to watch the world quidditch cup best. Before all the horrible stuff happened after the match of course. The special effects were really good and of course Harry and his friends are as interesting to watch as ever. Honestly, I did not enjoy this instalment as much the previous Harry Potter movies. Somehow, I felt that the characters could have developed further and loads of stuff from the book was left out which would left me quite puzzled if I had not already read the book. But I am a Harry Potter fan so I will still watch the next movie instalment and read the next book. The books are simply too enjoyable to not read! :c)

Movie Feast

I was so deprived of movies for the past few months, but I have made up for it by going on a movie feast the last week I was on leave. Here were the movies that I caught:

1) Million Dollar Baby
I caught this on my plane ride to Brisbane. Not a good movie to watch when one's brain is in need of relaxing or when one is eating. (Supper was being served on the plane as I was watching this and the bloody fighting scenes were right before my eyes as I was eating. That sure made me feel like throwing up the food!) Its heavy going stuff but I was full of admiration for the female lead's fighting spirit and her commitment to her dream. A movie that will leave a lasting impression on anyone who watches it.

2) Princess Diaries
Watched this while I was in Ispwich. Frankly, I prefer its sequel. But this was still enjoyable. Watch only when have nothing better to do or watch.

3) Hitch
This is one of the most enjoyable movies that I have watched in a long time. The pace of the movie was good and its plot witty and funny. I would recommend this to anyone who wants a good time and a laugh. I watched this on my plane ride back to Singapore and it was embarrassing as there were some scenes that were so funny that I had to try very hard to control the volume of my laughter!

4) House of Fury
Caught this on my plane ride back too. A kung fu movie by Stephen Fung. Watchable for its cast of beautiful people, namely Stephen Fung, Daniel Wu and girl group Twins. Another movie to watch when you have nothing better to do or watch.

5) Prince and Me
An enjoyable teen flick. As good as fairytales are supposed to be. A movie to catch if you want to watch a feel good movie that is not a comedy. Predictable but not sappy.

6) Mean girls
Another movie to watch when you have nothing better to do or watch.

7) Supersize Me
Heavy going stuff. Makes you very aware of the kinds of food that you put in your mouth after that. The Ministry of Education and also Health should consider showing this to all school children to get them turned off fast food. And anyone trying to lose weight should watch this movie. Guarantee to develop a new attitude of self-love for your own body and become very paranoid about the food you eat for a week at least.

Ella Enchanted

A fairytale comedy about a girl under an "Obedience" spell who ends up happily ever after with a Prince. The "Obedience" spell causes the girl to obey all instructions given to her, no matter who gives them and she has to carry out those instructions, even if it is killing the man she loves. But of course, there is a happy ending, with the wicked punished and the good rewarded.

A typical "Cinderella" tale re-enacted with slight variations countless times, so what makes this movie any different? Not very much but I will still recommend if you want to watch a really enjoyable romantic comedy. Further I have a gut feel that the two leads (Anne Hathaway and Hugh Dancy) are destined for wonderful acting careers ahead. Catch this movie if you want to become an early fan and when they are mega-stars like Julia and Brad, you can tell everyone that you have been their fan since the beginning. I must confess that I was already an "Anne Hathaway" fan before this movie. She is gorgeous, has acting ability and in this movie, I realised she can sing too! Of course, after checking out some of her fan sites, I realised that she has Broadway experience so her singing abilities are not as surprising as I thought.

A movie to catch if you want to watch a happy movie that is not sappy, acting ability and of course eye candy! My copy of the VCD is available if any of you are interested!

Disappointing, disappointing

Yesterday was a day of disappointments. Not in terms of the day itself and the people I was with but dispppointing due to the movie and musical I watched.

I was full of expectations for the new movie, Mr & Mrs Smith, starring Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie. Two gorgeous actors who actually can act in an action movie, expectations were high from the moment the movie started. The movie got off on a promising start and was especially witty during the dinner scene where the two leads have found out each other's identity and were taking precautions against each other. Unfortunately, after that scene, the rest of the movie went downhill and turned into mindless action scene after action scene with no plot. Even the ending was abrupt. The audience never got to know how or why their respective agencies decided to stop hunting them down. I had such high hopes for the movie and ended feeling quite disppointed with it. Of course, the two leads make such a drool-worthy couple but sadly that alone was not enough to hold the movie.

The other disappointment for the day was the Phua Chu Kang (PCK) musical. I had free tickets to that, just in case, you, dear reader are wondering why I actually paid money to watch it. I went to the musical with little expectation, expecting at the least, a laugh at the slapstick jokes so typical in a PCK episode. Sadly, I never knew what went on in the musical as I fell asleep around half an hour into it and my friend had to prod me awake during intermission. I felt this urge to leave but decided it was rather rude and maybe I should show some support for local productions. I stayed awake throughtout the second half but my impression of the musical never improved. The plot was flimsy and the ending quite bizzarre. I attended the musical, with hope that I will be surprised and proven wrong. I know now that I should have stayed at home and cleaned my room instead. At least, my time would have been better spent.

David Tao Mini-concert

I watched the mini concert like three weeks ago and decided to write about it now coz my blog looks a little bare. I enjoy his new album but as the critics had pointed out, its not very different from his previous works. I suppose, its quite difficult for him to surpass himself since he has always been so consistently good. But one of the tracks "Ghost" is now my default handphone ring tone though. Yes, I am still a big big fan of his and I enjoyed the mini concert very much.

Dear David's voice is still as melodious as ever and its always a pleasure to hear him "live"! Especially so when he is singing one of my favourite songs "????". I recorded that part of his performance but until I figure out how to post it on my blog, the recording shall remain as my sole enjoyment! Ha ha ha. Anyway, I decided not to be selfish and post some photos that I had taken during the mini concert. Hmmmmm, I am really looking forward to his concert at the end of the year. (Hey, Monoceros, you will be back then and we could go together if you are interested!)

Just a note

Its been a really long time since I had homecooked food on a weekday. Yesterday, I managed to reach home in time for dinner and had my first weekday dinner at home this year! Yes, that really was a moment for celebration!

Suffered from bad cramps the whole of today and medicine does not seem to help. I am still in pain now. Sigh. :c(

Watched really bad korean drama "Memories of Bali" on cable TV. The ending to the drama was soooooooooooooooo dumb that I should not have wasted so many saturday nights watching if I had known how totally ridiculous the ending was going to be!!! But oh well.

Going off to watch another korean drama "All About Eve" now. This time on VCD. Its one of my favourite dramas and I have lost count how many times I have watched it. But I am still not sick of watching it yet. Now, I just fast forward the VCD and play the bits I want to watch. Ha ha ha.

CD splurge

Went on a CD splurge on saturday, was getting tired of the music I was listening to. Bought Lee Hom's new album "TheSun and Moon in my heart (?????)" (best translation I can attempt), the Love Contract (????-Taiwanese drama serial) soundtrack and Angela Chang's new album "Aurora". Unfortunately, the Angela Chang CD came with a deep scratch on the CD so I have not had a chance to listen to it yet. Sigh, now I have to go back to the CD shop to change the CD, so troublesome! I have only listened to Lee Hom's album so far, will write about my thoughts on the albums in future entries.

Oh come on, S.H.E., you could have done better.

Up until the last day, I was still not sure if I could attend the S.H.E. concert for which I had bought tickets to. Thankfully, I finished all the work I had to do and just managed to make it to the Singapore Indoor Stadium in time for the concert.

Sad to say, the concert turned out to be ONE BIG DISAPOINTMENT! After all the hard work and hours I put in to finish my work plus the $150 I paid for the ticket, I was SORELY DISAPPOINTED with the concert. I was seriously excited about the concert and so looking forward to a fun time. After all, this is the top mandarin pop girl group and no other girl group even comes close in second place. Ok, I admit, its not so much their vocal powess (but they can sing) that wins them fans but their wacky chemistry with each other. Of course, my favourite member Ella was fantastic as the female lead Lily, in the drama "The Rose".

I think the problems all started when the concert organiser decided on a full stage instead of the usual 3 sided one. And coupled that with a poor sound system and even poorer concert choregraphy, even the best artiste will have a bad concert. A full stage does not mean a bad concert, Jay did it, his concert was fantastic and I would have thought S.H.E., with their fantastic fan rapport would have done an even better job! What more, there are 3 of them as compared to one Jay. (Now I finally understand why Jay's concert was titled "The Incomparable Jay Chou World Tour" and S.H.E.'s concert was titled "A Magical Enchantment", probably because I would have to have been seriously under a spell to have thought the concert any good!) Unfortunately, the choregraphy was so bad that I felt like walking out in the middle of the concert, and we are talking about my favourite girl group's performance here! And I have not even started to comment on the poor sound system which FAILED not once but THREE times during the concert, especially during the encore number! Sigh, what is the point of sound checks or were any even done!?!

For most of the concert, I saw the backs of 3 people and had to look at the big screen to actually watch the concert. I would have been better off with a $20 concert dvd at home. And for the times when the 3 members actually faced different sections of the stadium to perform, the same member would face the same side of the audience each time. So for the entire concert, I had Hebe facing me and Selina's and Ella's butts towards me. I mean, anyone with enough sense would have told them to change positions after all, people paid money to see 3 members and not one and the butts of the other 2! Lastly, whenever they stopped to speak to the audience, they seem to forget that they had 3 other sections of the stadium and for most parts, faced one side of the audience. I know its a full stage and I do not expect to have the 3 of them facing my direction for the entirety of the concert but hey, I am a member of the paying audience too, if I had wanted to look at their butts, I would have saved my money and bought a dvd! I had thought to enjoy myself after a tough week at work but how wrong I was. Instead of fun, I was lamenting on the time and money wasted.

Of course, this concert does not make me any less of a fan. S.H.E. epitomises the unique relationship every girl has with her own bunch of close girl friends. The at easeness with each other and knowing that we can never appear too silly with friends who are so close. That is what I like best about them. But I still have to express my disappointment at their concert. I wish I had seen more of the sincerity and consideration they have so often shown towards their fans and themselves on entertainment programs and backstage recordings. Those were the very elements that won them legions of fans and made them a girl group without parallel. Come on S.H.E., I know you girls can do better!

Jay Concert Part II

OK I admit this, I am a Jay Chou fan. Not the kind that will run out and buy his CD when he releases a new album or the kind who makes posters and welcome him at the airport when he comes to town. But I enjoy his music and of course reading trashy tabloid news on him.

His concert was fantastic. Really regret not bringing my Canon Ixus to record some memories for myself. So how was it great you ask? He showed he could dance, he can REALLY sing and he made my heart beat a little faster with his fantastic piano playing skills! He knows he is not a great talker so he filled his concert with good music and surprises that made my money worth! Never thought of him as a good dancer but he sure showed he can dance and a good one too during his dance numbers. And of course I have always been a sucker for men who can play the piano with style! I had a crush on him during his piano performance but luckily, the crush only last as long as his concert! Most of all, he sang, in a voice that made the lyrics come alive and me forget my world that night. For those few hours, I screamed and sang along, forgetting all about the big bag of unfinished work I had lugged home from the office to do during the weekend! And that is what I call "A Really Good Show!"

Thank you, Jay for those few fantastic hours! :c)

Jay World Tour

I am feeling really broke now. Just spent S$130 on Jay Chou's World Tour concert tickets. He better put up a good show considering I spent my entire lunch break choosing tickets at sistic for the concert. Here I must really compliment the woman who was helping me at the Esplanade's sistic counter, she was really patient and checked up all the better seats left for me to choose. There are still very capable and polite people in Singapore's service industry and I am really glad I had the priviledge of meeting one of them this afternoon. Its only the second day of priority booking and all the really good seats are already gone!!! To quote my friend with me then,"Even if we are willing to spend the money and buy the most expensive seats, there are none left for us to buy!!!"

For the benefit of those who do not know who Jay Chou is, first let me ask this question, "Which planet have you been living on???". Go to any search engine and type in his name and you will get an idea of how hugely popular he is. Although I feel he has been repeating some of the musical stuff he has been doing for some time, I do not deny he still produces good stuff. Some of my favourite mandarin pop songs are written by him and his good partner, Fang Wen Shan.

I have been waiting to watch his concert for some time, so I suppose I can rationalise that it is money well-spent. Hee hee, Becky Bloomwood at work again!!! Actually, I am quite excited about this concert although I am not a die-hard fan of his, if the rest of you get the idea. I like his music but I am not really interested in his private life and seriously do not think I will be bothered if the rumours of him and Jolin Tsai are true. Whatever lah, he needs to have a life too!!! He could do alot worse then a gorgeous babe like her! Anyway, he better put up a superb performance on that night!

Z pop concert

Ok, I confess. I spent the entire saturday night at a mandarin pop concert screaming and jumping. I was at the Z pop concert organised by Lian He Zao Bao (translated as Singapore's only serious mandarin newspaper publication). It was an open air pop concert held at the big field in front of City Hall. It was a really fun concert featuring numerous acts from the mandarin pop scene. I went for the inaugural one last year too, that one was free. This year, I had to pay S$10 but the money goes to charity.

Its been a long time since I went to a pop concert, the last one being David Tao's I think and well, I had loads of fun in short. The company I had with me was good, friends that I have not met for around a month and we were catching up on gossip as we watched the concert!!The atmosphere of the whole concert was fantastic and the weather was good this year, it rained last year and everything was mushy. Next year, I would want to go again and I would have a picnic with my friends there!! That would be so fun!!

The act I had wanted to watch most was a new group called F.I.R., I do not know exactly what genre I would say they do but pop rock I suppose. They compose their own music and the female lead singer is really fantastic. And of course, she is really pretty to boot!!!. Why are there always such people around!! Sigh. I can't exactly describe what is it about their music that I like but I think their music is easy on the ears and their lyrics are reflective and meaningful so in short, I am a fan lah, what else do you want to know. Buy their CD if you are interested to know how they sound!! Ha ha ha. Hearing them sing live was really exciting and most of the screaming and jumping I did with my friends was when they were performing. Yep, the whole group of us were there to see F.I.R.. And so were many people there that night since quite a lot of people left after F.I.R.'s performance.

I stayed till the end of the concert to watch the other acts. Boyband Energy are really good dancers, the Korean actor Ryu Si Won looks very cute in person. My favourite Singapore Homeboy, JJ Lin Junjie was good too, he really has a very nice voice. Its so wonderful to see such good performers all at one go. Hope they have this concert again next year and bring in equally fantastic performers.
