The Shopaholic returns

Its my fourth week in USA and I have bought so much stuff that its unbelievable! Well, I came one big bag and will be going home with 2 big bags. Samsonite was having sale, I just could not resist the lovely blue bag. Haha.

One of my colleague had her friend from Singapore visiting her. Over dinner she was listing the places she wanted to visit in Boston. That was when I realised that all I had visited in Boston were Chinatown, Newbury Street and Washington Street. For those of you who have never been to Boston, well, Newbury Street and Washington Street are where most of the shopping in Boston is. Every weekend, I have been going to Boston but its always to shop and eat. Other than that, I have not seen much of Boston.

Of course I have been doing other stuff besides shopping. I went whale watching at Cape Cod, got lost driving to Salem and ate lots of seafood! Eating is something I have been doing alot of too. Asian food is quite easily available so I am not really missing that. The portions here are HUGE and everything comes in SUPER size in the supermarkets. I have been sharing food with my colleagues to avoid eating too much.

I am proud to annouce that I have been driving myself to work each morning for the past one and half week. Roads are much wider here and parking spaces are wider so in a way, it is easier to drive here. There have been incidents of course. I got very lost in Boston and on the freeway the last week and I had no GPS. That was damn scary man. But, Thank God, I managed to drive myself back to the hotel safely.

I have taken quite abit of photos but I have been too lazy to transfer them from my camera to laptop so the photos have to wait. I have another one and a half weeks more here, then its Tokyo and finally home. I do not think I am really homesick yet but I am glad that I will be going home soon.

My luxury goods confession

I am a shopaholic and I have enough entries on this blog to evidence of that. Clothes, shoes and bags, I buy alot of them and sometimes even the same design in different colors. However, there is this other something I have to admit. I have a weakness for luxury goods. If I were rich, I would be decked out in LV, Gucci, Prada, CD, Hermes, Fendi ,Chanel etc. However, I am not, so I can only content with little treats now and then. Whenever one of my friends buy a new luxury item, they can count on me to "ohh and ahhh" and share in their purchase experience. Even when I walk along the streets, I observe the luxury items other people are using. Sometimes, when with like-minded friends, we will observe and gossip about the authenticity of the luxury item that another fellow human being is using. Why would someone be carrying a SGD3,000 bag to the neighborhood shopping mall? Is it fake that's why she is so careless with it? Or is she simply a show off? Silly questions like the above sometimes plague me and my like-minded friends!

I bought my first luxury item after graduation from university. Such a momentous event of course must be celebrated. I bought myself a green Salvatore Ferragamo wallet which I have not used yet till today. Why??? Well, on the advice of my good friend, in my first job and as the lowest life form in the company, it will not do me any good to be flashy. Although I have since progressed from being the lowest life form, I am now saving that gift I bought for myself for some other time.

After that first splurge, I did not buy anything in the next few years partly due to the fact that I was getting a really tragic pay in my first job. Besides basic necessities, there really was not much left over to splurge. I love luxury goods but I am not one of those people who are so crazy to own a luxury item that I am willing to forgo basic necessities in order to buy an item.

My second luxury item was a blue Bally bag. Until today, I still have no idea how I ended up buying it. It was on sale and I felt like spending money and that handbag was just calling me to buy it. To date, the handbag ranks as one of the most expensive impulse buys for me. I still use the bag these days and its in good shape even after 3 years.

To celebrate my promotion from a graduate assistant to senior, I bought myself a Gucci bag with pink leather trimmings. That bag is my most expensive indulgence to date. I thought about for some time before deciding to buy but decided that I should just buy it. Hey, you only live once and I really do not want to regret not buying that bag.

Since then, I have been buying little treats for myself every year. I know some of my friends do not understand this fascination with luxury goods just as I do not understand a techie's fascination with buying the the latest technology. I do not try to make excuses or try to make people understand, its just a part of me. I enjoy buying luxury goods and I enjoy carrying them. I also know that there are cheaper stuff which are just as pretty and durable and I do buy those too. But if a pretty luxury item does catch my eye and its within my budget, well, I am buying it!

Just a little shopping trip

Friday I was on leave so I decided to spend the day exercising. What better form of exercise is there then shopping, it keeps me on my feet for hours and time passes so fast that I barely notice that I am exercising!! Ha ha, okay, I admit, that's cheating but I really did walked for quite a few hours that day.

I finally said good-bye to my ugly toenails when I went for a pedicure on Friday and now my toenails are painted a happy burgundy colour! Happy Happy Happy! Since I was already at the shopping mall, it was of course a good excuse to go do some shopping. Marks & Spencer, Dorothy Perkins, Sembawang Music, The Face Shop, The Body Shop etc. Sometimes I am really amazed at the amounts of money I spend on skincare and toiletries, especially now when The Body Shop is having their weekly specials. Every time I walk into the shop, I spend at least SGD 100. I so could not believe myself when I realised I had spent SGD120 just on shower gel, shampoo and hair conditioner the other day. Granted, that is approximately nine months supply and these are toiletries I use on a daily basis!!!

Anyway, I "discovered" a really good skincare brand recently. The Face Shop's paper masks are really quite good. The size of the paper mask covers my fat face adequately and its soaked with enough essence to ensure that the mask is moist and lasts 20 minutes. And so far (touch wood), my sensitive skin has been responding positively to the masks! Plus, best of all, there are so many varieties to choose from, so you can use different masks when your skin has different needs. They are very affordable too, with 3 pieces going for SGD 12 and if you are buying from Korea, its around half the price! So far I have only tried their face masks but if I have the chance, I will probably try other stuff like cleanser etc.

Shop, shop, shop

In my attempt to have a work life balance, I have been shopping alot. My credit card is protesting but somehow I cannot resist. My wardrobe is bursting with clothes and I have lost count of the number of pairs of shoes and bags I have but somehow, I cannot resist. I must be sick.........

Anyway, just in case any of you are interested, here's what I bought:
1) a pair of sexy strappy heels from VNC (how can a gal resist!)
2) 6 tops from Marks & Spencer
3) 2 pairs of trousers from Marks & Spencer
4) one top and one shirt from Gap
5) a black cardigan from Gap ( I have been looking for one for sooooooo long!)
6) 4 bottles of shower gel from Body Shop (on sale u know, how can I resist!)
7) a black Puma jacket (very kill-bill cool!!)
8) one shirt from Tommy
9) one blue cardigan from Gap (very lovely shade of blue!)
10) one pair of black heels from Charles & Keith (wonder if this really counts, this is for work after all)
11) a white wool bag from Joop

That's alot but it sure felt good when I was buying all that stuff. Retail therapy is so useful. Now I just have to find space to keep all that stuff! Ha ha.

More hooky tales

I was supposed to head back to office to finish work on saturday but when the whole country's shopping malls are having sales, how can I resist. Hee hee. So I went shopping for the whole of Saturday. The damage to my credit card was not too bad, hmmmm, maybe I should head to the shops again this weekend. :cP

The shopping list is as follows:
1) First stop was Novo and I ended up buying a pair of brown and gold heels. I have been looking for a nice pair of gold shoes for a really long time and I finally found it! Happiness!
2) Bought 2 red tops from Dorothy Perkins
3) Next stop was La Senza. I really needed new bras but they were out of my size so I ended up with a pair of lovely blue PJ bottoms instead.
4) Nine West was having sales, how can I resist a peek. I really need shoes anyway. Yah, I know that is just an excuse, I ALWAYS need shoes. Ha ha. Ended splurging on a pair of black heels. They were really frightfully expensive but oh well, I really felt buying something really expensive for myself.
5) Liz Clairborne was my last stop and where I bought the most stuff. I found the perfect white skirt there! A white skirt that on me, looked like a normal skirt and did not have the enlarging effect typical of white skirts. In addition, I bought a pair of black pants and a pink work shirt.

That ends my shopping report card! Sorry, no pictures available coz digital camera is with my brother in Brisbane, but I will entertain special requests to wear my new stuff the next time I meet you! Hee hee.

Playing hooky

Right after lunch one day, the admin people announced that there will be fire drill exercise in our office building later in the afternoon. As the thought of climbing down the stairs from the 31st floor which my office was on to the lobby really did not appeal to my colleagues and myself so we played hooky. A few of us decided to take a break at nearby Raffles Exchange before the lifts cease to work and come back to work after the fire drill was over. So the lot of us trooped off, some decided to have coffee while some of us shopped at the shops there. Me, being a shopholic, was obviously one of those who went shopping.

The Body Shop was having sale so I bought my next few months supply of shower gel and hair conditioner. I spent the time walking in and out of beauty care shops with one of my colleague. Next on was Missha where I bought 2 bottles of nail polish. I was only going to buy one but the sales girl was really attentive and helpful so I ended with 2 bottles of nail polish instead! Sometimes, good service can really be bad on my wallet. Hee hee. But all too soon, we received news that the fire drill was over and it was time for us to head back to work. Sigh.

Mini shopping excursion

I couldn't resist squeezing in a mini shopping excursion over the long weekend. Nothing major but just dropped by Marina Square for a browse. I have been wanting to take a look around there since it had a facelift but always had no opportunity. Its really a maze there. I got lost on friday trying to find a restaurant with my fren. And it being a friday night was packed filled with people! There were snaking queues for every restaurant man!

Anyway, back to my mini shopping excursion. I REALLY have to get some work clothes but ended with 3 casual tops, a pair of bermudas and some vitamin pills instead. Like I said, nothing major, considering my shopping list which includes bras, skirts, shirts, shoes and perfume!

Shrinking sizes?

Sometimes I wonder if clothe sizes are shrinking or my body is growing. Actually, I know its my body growing lah. All I do is eat and work and take cabs coz there is no public transport by the time I get off from work, so of course, my body is just expanding like a balloon. Wonder when the day will come when it explodes. Will not be a pretty sight though. Hmmmm.

Anyway, Fatgirl has grown so big that she is having problems buying clothes. The biggest sizes at plus size clothing stores no longer fits! Help! Why don't they carry larger sizes?? Do think there are no obese people around??

Another problem that I encounter is that these plus size stores carry so few pieces of the really large sizes that its always the last crappy piece left or they have ran out of my size! Help, does anyone know where I can buy some new clothes from. Help! I really need to buy new clothes.

Yes, I know going on a diet is a really good solution but unfortunately I have no will power. I need to eat to work, if I am hungry, my brain freezes and I cannot work. Besides, I work so hard already, if I have to eat crappy (read: blandless and healthy) food too, then my life will be super miserable leh. Help!

"Shopping is good for the economy", so the shopaholic says.

Hee hee, did more shopping yesterday. I had a discount voucher from Dorothy Perkins so I just could not resist buying! Walked out of the store with 5 tops!!! One blue retro top, 2 red tops, 1 green top and a white top. I already have many white tops but white tops goes with almost anything so I figured an extra white top will always come in useful. But that's just the bimbo in me talking of course. Ha ha.

Hmm, now I just need to concentrate on getting some work shirts and skirts then I will be done with my shopping! Its so irritating, flare skirts are just so not flattering on fat girls like me but it seems that flare skirts are all the rage this season, I cannnot seem to find an A-line skirt anywhere!! Has anyone seen any A-line skirts around in my size?? Please do let me know so I can go buy it!!

My feet are aching

When I walk along Orchard Road and see people carrying numerous shopping bags, I always wonder how can anyone buy SO MUCH stuff. Well, apparently, people can. I ended up with a total of 5 huge shopping bags after 6 hours of intensive shopping! OK, my mum was with me so some of it was hers and some were for my dad but still it was 5 big bags. Quite horrifying! My feet hurt like crazy now but I am already thinking of which other shops I am going to visit tomorrow. Yes, the "Shopping Monster" in me has been unleashed once again! Ha ha.

I was rather pleased with my buys. My mum have been complaining that I am always wearing the same clothes to work so I decided it must be past time to update my wardrobe if even my mum is complaining about the clothes I wear! Anyway, the following is what I have bought in the past week of shopping:
1) One pair of black pants and a plaid skirt from Marks & Spencer
2) One pair of black shoes from P.O.A.
3) One stripe shirt and one dressy top from Metro
4) One pink top from Joan Allen
5) One pair of black pants and one pair of camel-colored pants from Liz Claiborne

I kinda figured that a gal can never have too many pairs of black pants, although I think I already have 4 pairs. Hey, they are supposed to make me look slimmer and taller ok! By the way, I ended with a discount card for Liz as a result of some promotion, so if anyone wants a 10% discount for Liz, do let me know. Just for the record, the service at Liz was very good too, they were closing when I entered the store but the sales people made no attempt to rush me or chase me away but instead encouraged me to try on pieces of clothing and even recommended clothing for me to try! That's what I call good service!

Splurged!

On Tuesday evening, I was out shopping with three of my colleagues and saw this really lovely bag on sale. The price was a little on the steep side but I decided I should splurge a little after working so hard. Unfortunately, it was the last piece available and I have something about buying last pieces especially when I have pay so much. Anyway, I decided not to buy it.

Tonight, as I was slogging away in office as usual. Suffering from lack of food and oxygen as the air conditioner in the building turns off automatically at 7pm, my colleague called me and told me that new pieces of the bag I was eyeing were available in the store! As it is now sales period, no reservations are allowed. I was in the middle of work but I left everything as it was, locked up my laptop and rushed down to Orchard Road to buy the bag! This definately ranks as one of the most bimbotic things I have ever done! Mission accomplished! I bought myself a nice Christmas present!

As I type, my office area is still in a mess and I am hoping my lap top and files will still be intact when I arrive in office tomorrow morning! But I am happy as I have bought my bag!! :c)

Shopping withdrawal

I think I need new clothes although I already have a cupboard full of clothes! I think a girl can never have too many pairs of shoes, too much clothes, accessories or bags! I need to go shopping. I need to go shopping.

Happy shopping in Brisbane

Frankly, I am quite bored with the stores in Singapore when it comes to shopping. I know, its already a shopping paradise and I should not really be complaining but I was still really excited to be shopping in Brisbane. I think its fortunate that the shops in Brisbane close at around 5pm or else I will be much poorer from my trip there. After 3 hours of shopping, I only managed to visit Target, Witchery and Sportsgirl. Its so fun to shop there simply because Fatgirl does not have a size problem there. Ok, the size problem still exists but at least I am easily able to find clothes in my size there. Sportsgirl was having sales but nothing in there caught my eye. I spurgled on a really expensive Witchery top. Feel a little guilty now but I am still convinced that it was a unique top and I will have use for it sometime. Why hasn't anyone decide to franchise Witchery in Singapore. Anyone in the fashion industry reading this??? Please, please bring Witchery to Singapore. I really like the stuff there although they are not cheap. But the designs are lovely and the service there is good too. The salesgirl was so good that she nearly convinced me to get a pink top that I had tried on. I would bought it if not that I have already lost count of how many pink tops I own currently!

Target is a good place to shop but searching for the good stuff takes time and effort. Further, it seems like a popular store since alot of the nice stuff were out of my size. Looking on the bright side, it means that I was in a "sick" way, saving money!! Ha ha. Anyway, I did walk out of the store with a denim skirt and a work top.

Since I was at Myer Centre, of course I had to pay a visit to Chocolate Boulevard and buy some homemade fudge and chocolate. Yum yum. This store is really worth a visit, the homemade chocolate and fudge is reasonably priced and taste really good. But I ran out of time at that and had no time to visit Meyer although they were having sales. Sigh.

Shopaholic in Johor Bahru

Friday was a holiday for me as I had to work on the public holiday on Tuesday so the Boss gave us a day off on Friday instead. So off I went with three of my colleagues to nearby Johor Bahru (JB) in Malaysia for a day of fun. The shopping is not much cheaper there, maybe I will save a few dollars if I shopped there instead of Orchard Road but when it comes to variety, Orchard Road still beats JB by a wide mile.

The highlight of my day was the sale at VNC. As those who are in know will know, VNC is a shoe shop that sells a wide range of affordable shoes and they have an outlet at CityLink in Singapore. Anyway, its outlet in City Square, JB was having sale and after comparing prices, it was slightly cheaper to buy there. Although looking back, we were just simply crazy lah and the four of us just went crazy buying shoes. Between the four of us, we bought 10 pairs of shoes. I bought 3 pairs!!! (Sorry, no pictures available, digital camera was left behind with my brother in Ipswich. But I will entertain special requests to wear them when I meet up!)

I still its disgusting to buy so many pairs of shoes at one go but DSD thinks its ok. Then again, she is my friend so she has to make me feel better lah!! Ha ha ha. But I have to say, I am really pleased with my buy, a pair of black shoes for work, a pair of strappy peach heels and a pair of blue/white heels for casual days and dinners. And as another colleague commented, shoes are fixed assets and can be used for many months so I should not feel like I am splurging, instead I should think of them as an investment!! Ha ha ha. That sounds so much like a line out of the "Shopaholic" books!!

Went shopping again

My friend commented as she was shopping for clothes with me that I am a very focused shopper. As in, when I shop, I really shop. I browse through each clothes rack systematically and pick out the items I want to try. In my focused state, all I can think of is fabric, style and size. Whichever friend(s) who happen to be with me will usually have to spend some effort if they want to get a response from me!

Yes, the fact that I am even writing this entry means more money have been spent at the shops! I have, sadly, maxed out my supplementary credit card for the month and have to survive on NETS now. Argh, I should get my own credit card!

My Favourite Korean Hunk!

Its been quite a relaxed week at work due to inefficiencies of a certain client. Going to suffer next week but oh well, I might as well take advantage of being able to get off work early while I can!

Decided to meet up with good friend, S for dinner because its been quite a while since I met up with her and urm.......... because I wanted to borrow her Giordano discount card. Hmmmm, why Giordano, because my favourite Korean hunk is the new Giordano model. Ha ha ha and he looks soooooo good in the ads that I have to go buy those clothes! OK, come on, I am not THAT bimbotic lah! I am past due for new casual clothes and the new collection at Giordano looks really colourful and lovely! And of course, that Korean hunk looks soooooooo good in the ads. Drool.........

Anyway, after a lovely dinner at Crystal Jade, S and I went shopping! Its been so long since I had time to make dinner appointments with friends! Hmmm, really miss that. S probably got really bored because I kept dragging her from shop to shop and trying on numerous pieces of clothing and asking her for her opinion. Finally at 8 plus, we ended up at Giordano and both of us went crazy there, selecting clothes to try on. The new collection is really lovely, bursting in bright sunny colours! I ended buying 2 long sleeves T-shirts and 1 short sleeve T-shirt. Too bad the local collection is different from the Korean one and they do not carry the items my Korean hunk wore in the Korean ads or I would have ended up buying more! Ha ha ha.

p.s. Thanks S, for accompanying me in my crazy shopping quest and for use of your Giordano discount card!

p.s. again Click here to see my favourite Korean hunk in the new Giordano Korea ads.

Becky Bloomwood tales

Yes, I went shopping again today! After the wedding lunch, DSD and I headed towards Orchard Road for some serious shopping! I am rather pleased with my purchases! I would have ended up buying even more if not that two pairs of shoes that I had wanted were out of my size!

Here's what I bought:
1)Black leather bag from Ness (Perfect for work and large enough to fit my lap top!)
2)Pink open toe heels from PrettyFit (These are really lovely! Mummy really likes them too and is trying to convince me to share!)
3)Shirt from Marks and Spencer (Have been eyeing this piece for some time, really glad its now affordable after they have decided to put it on sale!)
4)Shirt from Dorothy Perkins (for work)

Hmmmm, I was supposed to be just accompanying DSD on her shopping expedition but somehow, I ended up with more stuff than her instead!

CD splurge

Went on a CD splurge on saturday, was getting tired of the music I was listening to. Bought Lee Hom's new album "TheSun and Moon in my heart (?????)" (best translation I can attempt), the Love Contract (????-Taiwanese drama serial) soundtrack and Angela Chang's new album "Aurora". Unfortunately, the Angela Chang CD came with a deep scratch on the CD so I have not had a chance to listen to it yet. Sigh, now I have to go back to the CD shop to change the CD, so troublesome! I have only listened to Lee Hom's album so far, will write about my thoughts on the albums in future entries.

Temptations

The problem with shopaholics is that they have many wants and are easily tempted. I have been shopping around for a MP3 player for a really long time but just have not made a decision on which brand to get. Of course I do have some ideas on which brands I would like to get and compared their features etc etc but just never felt this burning desire to buy. I simply resort to borrowing my brother's Creative Nomad MG II whenever I needed a MP3 player.

Anyway, before all of you decide I am running in circles, I went to the Creative fair today. My brother needed a new sound card and I decided to tag along to check out the MP3 players available. I had actually picked out two I had really liked which were the Creative Muvo TXFM 512MB and the Creative Muvo 2 FM. But being the super indecisive person that I am, I left without buying either. I was very very very very very tempted though to plonk down money for a pink or blue Muvo 2 FM. But I decided the time has not come for me to make such a purchase (ie I have no money!!!).

Its really horrible going for such fairs because the temptation is huge to buy. Can you imagine, holding the product you want in your hands and having to walk away from it!!! Horrible horrible feeling. But when I have the money and decide I can no longer live without a MP3 player, I will definately be buying one from the Creative Nomad family. I know there are other brands available and there will be those who disagree with my choice but let's just say that I am a fan of Creative products. Maybe because its a Singapore company and on some level, it does make me feel good supporting a Singapore brand that has made good in the global market. Doing my bit of patriotic duty you know. Or it could be my lovely experience with using my brother's seriously dated Nomad MG II. Whatever, but I do know I will have pink and blue Muvo 2 FMs floating in my dreams tonight!!! Sigh.

Confessions of a shopaholic

Yup, I am on my way to becoming Becky Bloomwood!!! I had nothing much to do today at work which meant I could leave the office on time (a rare occurence) and since my good friend XZ who works in the same organisation was free, we decided to hit the nearby shopping malls. I needed to buy more work clothes and have been deprived of proper shopping time the past month so I was raring to go.

Dorothy Perkins was our first stop. Nothing much, but ended with a round-neck white T-shirt that I have been looking for to wear under my jacket. My main aim was to visit GG<5 (one of my favourite local clothing lines) as they were having sales!! Yes, that beautiful magical word. I went into the shop with the intention to browse only but.........., as usual, I ended up more than looking and left the shop with a shopping bag of new purchases. On my way to the train station, I passed by Charles and Keith (a local shoe brand) and decided to pop in for a look. And before I knew it, I ended picking up a shoe and asking the salesperson if they have it in my size. Well, they did and the shoes looked lovely on my feet so of course they ended as mine!!! Then I did what Becky always does when she overspends, which is to start rationalising my purchases.

1) One Dorothy Perkins Round-neck white T-shirt (essential, for work, to be worn under jacket)
2) One GG<5 Black cardigan (another work essential)
3) One GG<5 Bright yellow knit top (another work essential too!)
4) One pair of black strappy heels from Charles & Keith (this is for work too!!)

So you see, all the above items were valid purchases, they all fall under the "items that can be used at the workplace" catagory, so none of them were frivolous purchases.

And to top it all off, my feet hurt so bad from all that shopping that I took a cab home. Yes, just call me "Becky" when any of you see me next.

p.s. Where is my equivalent Luke Brandon in all this!!! Sigh.

August 02, 2004

"Hi everyone, my name is Fatgirl and I am a shopaholic."

Does anyone know if there is a "Shopaholic Anonymous" group?? I think I need to curb my constant need to buy new stuff for myself!!! Its horrifying, yes, I have finally managed to shock even myself. I was on a break last week and let me re-cap for all of you what I had done. Well, I went shopping of course. And after one week of almost daily trips to Orchard Road, I ended up with 2 pairs of shoes, 3 bottoms, 7 tops and a number of skincare products. Shocking isn't it. I know. And that is not including the manicure, pedicure and spa treatment I went for.

The worst is not over. I am still on my break for this week and I can just foresee myself buying more things. This is so unhealthy. The only consolation is that I thought carefully before buying every item (what is the point though, ha ha ha, I still ended up buying most of the stuff I wanted) and I spent the money on stuff and NOT FOOD!!! At least I will be using the things I bought and not have them become "permenant residents" on my body!!
